I'm currently teaching English as an Additional language to kids and it bothers me how uniform the examples/pictures are. The most diversity that every shows up in books is people of different countries/ethnicities. That's to say, everybody is straight, able bodied, etc ( Read more... )

I'm a native English speaker* trying to learn Hindi on my own, without an institutional course -- I'd love one, mind you, but there aren't any that are affordable in the Bay Area (California, USA). I stumbled upon this foreign language book store at work and I wanted to share because I've never come across an online book store with such an extensive array of foreign language learning materials! I'm sure they must ship internationally as well.

I took Mandarin Chinese in college and in the second semester, my professor gave us each a Chinese surname (mine was 范 Fàn). I wanted to go a step further and get a first name as well, and I went to a naming website just for kicks (I know full well that's SO NOT a good idea, but I was really excited  ^_^;;;). mentalguy, a friend of mine, made this tool for me a while ago, and it just occurred to me that other people might find it useful.

Duizhao (named after the Chinese word for placing things side by side for comparison, 對照) is a parallel translation helper and HTML generator. It gives three windows to enter text into, and it outputs a nicely formatted HTML ( Read more... )
